This pre-owned, Greubel Forsey GMT Earth is a testament to what happens when every single aspect of watchmaking – from timekeeping precision to finishing – is pushed to the extreme. Combining extroverted aesthetics with extremely theoretically and technically sophisticated watchmaking, it is the fruit of an uncompromising and perfectionist collaboration between independent watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey.

Having worked together at complications manufacturer Renaud et Papi, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey decided to found Greubel Forsey in 2004, with the goal of pushing the limits of creativity, technology and craftsmanship. As Greubel himself recalls;

“Going against the tide, Stephen and I were convinced that there was still much to invent in the world of fine watchmaking. We therefore decided to undertake various watchmaking challenges and to initiate a revival in terms of architecture and fine craftsmanship, as well as with regard to innovation and the improvement of performance”

Producing no more than 100 timepieces a year, Greubel Forsey has pushed the boundaries of watchmaking ever since its inception, combining the extreme pursuit of timekeeping accuracy, constant innovation and hand finishing of the highest standard. Limited to 33 pieces, the GMT Earth in white gold exemplifies this design philosophy.

This pre-owned GMT Earth combines an impressive array of complications: an inclined tourbillon, two time zones, a world time disk which takes into account Daylight Saving Time and, most spectacularly, a three-dimensional model of the Earth which rotates every hour.

At the core of the watch is the tourbillon. From its inception, Greubel Forsey has been deeply involved in refining the tourbillon, which had evolved very little since the end of the 18thcentury. The purpose of the inclined tourbillon, positioned at 5 o’clock, is to never allow the balance wheel and escapement to be in the most imperfect variation of positions, so as to diminish the effects of gravity on precision timekeeping.

Perhaps the most visually striking element of the watch is the three-dimensional globe, offering a mesmerising 360-degree view of planet Earth, all the way from the North to the South pole. By reproducing the Earth's rotation in real time, this timepiece offers an intuitive view of time all over the world and a day and night indication. This technical feat was achieved by an original movement architecture in relation to the case shape and dimensions. Revealing the entire terrestrial globe required complex application of sapphire crystal, a skill which Greubel Forsey has acquired over many years of research and utilisation. It represents an improvement on the original Greubel Forsey GMT from 2011, on which Antarctica was not visible.

The integration of the Earth in this timepiece adds a certain serenity to it. Looking down at it, the Earth feels both close enough to be familiar and distant enough to seem an abstraction. It is a reminder, not so much of the time, but the ways in which we determine and perceive it.

The three-dimensional aspect of this timepiece is certainly not limited to the globe, but rather flows through the whole movement and case construction. The three-dimensionality first appears at the highest point of the dial, with the hour, minute and small seconds indications. The gaze then glides across the GMT display with its triangular red hand, followed by the power reserve displayed by a long, slender hand. Further, the case has a unique shape: it appears to have been wrapped around the various complications and features Greubel Forsey’s signature statement of purpose. An aperture at 7 o’clock allows the wearer to peer through at the globe. A pusher on the side of the case also allows for the GMT hand to be set in one-hour increments.

Flipping over to the movement side, the watch is no less intricate or visually stimulating. The reverse of the globe is visible, a feature which did not appear on earlier the earlier GMT watch by Greubel Forsey. Further, 24 time zones are displayed with the summer and winter times to complement the universal time indicated by the terrestrial globe.

At every angle, one is able to appreciate the uncompromising and painstaking levels of hand finishing which is put into this pre-owned GMT Earth, from the finishing of the tourbillon bridge to the base plate. With 22 employees used solely for finishing and decoration, it is clear that precision and reliability is not all that matters to Greubel Forsey.

The watch comes on a Greubel Forsey rubber strap and is accompanied by a corresponding white gold deployante buckle.

Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.

Size guide for wristbands

1 | Lug width

The lug width is the width of the strap at the end that is attached to the watch. This is the interior distance between the two lugs (horn-like protrusions) on the watch casing. The strap will fit your watch only if the lug width of the watch is the same width as the strap.

2 | Buckle width

The buckle width is the width of the strap at the buckle end. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the width of the original buckle must be identical to the strap width. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.

3 | Strap length

The strap length is the combined length of the short strap side 3A (without buckle) and the long strap side 3B. For metal straps, the length of the strap including the clasp is measured in the closed position.

4 | Strap thickness

Strap thickness is the height of the strap. Many leather straps thin out towards the buckle end, or “taper”. If you want to keep your watch’s original buckle and replace only the strap, the strap thickness must match the height of the original buckle. For watches with folding clasps, please choose a strap specially made for your particular clasp.
