This is a vintage c. 1959 stainless steel Blancpain Milspec 1 Fifty Fathoms. The stainless steel case is in excellent original condition with original bevels still intact. It has a military nylon strap with a stainless steel deployment clasp, and an acrylic crystal. It includes a screw down winding crown, and a solid screw down case back engraved with "BLANCPAIN – MILSPEC – AUTOMATIC – WATERPROOF – ANTIMAGNETIC - SHOCK PROTECTION – STAINLESS STEEL – SWISS MADE." The original dust cover is engraved with "IN CASE OF OPENING THE WATERTIGHTNESS OF THIS WATCH MUST BE RE-CHECKED BY AN OFFICIAL – BLANCPAIN – FIFTY FATHOMS – DEALER – PATENTS PENDING." The 41mm diameter solid three-body case, curved lugs, and flat unidirectional bezel, are brushed. The bezel is the original black Bakelite in excellent condition, with the gilt Arabic numeral dive times and baton minute markers, a knurled edge, and with a diamond shape at the 60. The original black dial has radium dot and baton hour indices, with a shield at the 12 o'clock position. The hand and dial radium is original to the watch, and there is a circular moisture indicator at 6 o clock that at one time changed from white to red if there was any moisture inside the seals; it has aged uniformly with the dial. There are white luminous skeletonized baton hands, a luminous center sweep second hand with an arrow-shaped tip, and there is a perimeter white minute/second scale. The 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed
This Blancpain Milspec 1 Fifty Fathoms has an automatic Blancpain caliber AS 1361 movement that's rhodium plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, an Incabloc shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance, a weighted rotor, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. It includes a hacking small seconds device for precision time setting.
The Blancpain Milspec 1 Fifty Fathoms was introduced in 1957-58. It became the standard-issue watch for U.S. Navy combat swimmers in 1958. This is a rare, early example.
